A communication system between you and your dog.
Reward Based Training
Marker training came to the world of dog training back in 1993. Before that point dogs were trained in the “yank and crank” system of dog training. Basically the William Kohler style of avoidance training.
Our new online course on The Power of Training Dogs with Markers was released in January of 2024. Back in 2005 Ed Frawley, the owner of Leerburg, released his first DVD on the subject of Markers and Reward Based Training (also called clicker training).
While the conceptual information in that old DVD is still accurate today, the past 20 years have seen our knowledge of how to apply markers and reward-based training become the gold standard on dog training.
This course includes 30 instructional videos and 52 student videos. This makes this online course more like going to a seminar where the instructor explains the training steps and then students work with their own dogs.
When the concepts in this course become the foundation of a training program we see the relationship between dogs and handlers improve and our dogs look forward to our training sessions because training becomes fun.

"I made my way to your website and classes because one of my three golden retrievers ran out of our yard and tried to attack a dog jogging down the road with its owner. I am currently taking your online class on dog aggression. This incident made me realize that I needed to do a lot of work with my dogs. After watching several segments of the aggression course I decided to start my dog training back at the beginning with this marker course.
The first thing I am learning is how little I know about training dogs! But I am excited about what I am learning from your classes and I am motivated to teach my dogs while I am learning as well. I started on charging the marker YES with all three of my dogs a few days ago and they all love it. I have noticed a difference in all of our attitudes. I have taken many notes on this class and know I will be referring back to them and will probably be watching some of these segments again.
I appreciate your common sense approach to dog training and the fact that you make it fun and exciting for the trainer and the dog(s). I am grateful for all the information - we needed it. I look forward to taking more of your online classes.

"The information and the way it's presented is invaluable to any dog owner. I've had dogs many years and I learned so much from this. It's a must for any dog owner"

"I found learning the marker system profoundly helpful in training my 10-month old pit-bull mix puppy. Implementing marker training has created more engagement between me and my dog, and has made training more upbeat, fun, and effective. One of the most powerful things I learned from the course is the combination of patience and the use of a marker in training. I have seen firsthand how this combination results in an active dog that is motivated to learn, not afraid to make mistakes (offers the wrong behavior in an attempt to figure out what I am asking for), and learns very quickly. The videos really helped me learn the timing of using the marker word and giving a reward. The videos were invaluable in learning all of the principles presented in the course, and some of the repetition in various modules was also helpful. The segment that really slammed it home for me was the human to human marker training. This was the perfect illustration of what the dog is going through in the learning process, and really helped me empathize with my dog (and helped me have more patience with the process). Overall, this course helped me have fun training my puppy, and that fun spilled over to my dog. I honestly cannot think of anything I would change about the course. The videos presented a nice variety of dogs and excellent examples of handling to try to emulate in my own training."

"This is yet another fabulous course from Leerburg and Ed. I have to say, my absolute favorite part, and the part that literally gave me that "ah-ha!" moment was the segment on "Training your friend"! I was finally able to see the importance of rewarding AT THE RIGHT MOMENT! This was a fabulous thing to put in the class.
I am using the YES marker instead of the clicker since I will always have words with me but not always have the clicker. My dogs already respond to the YES and it is a great way to communicate.
I am so excited to continue to working with my dog and getting the behaviors I want and need. Thank you again for taking so much time to educate the rest of us."

"I have been training dogs for over 20 years and I have always gone to Leerburg videos for training advice, I find the way Ed explains exercises both clear and precise. I use a clicker in training my explosive search dog but have never truly understood the concept of it. I decided to take this online course to give myself a refresher and reminder of the working parts of the Marker. I train with a lot of UK police dog handlers and have seen on numerous occasions opportunities where a marker would have been of great use. I found the content easy to follow and the videos were of great help and allowed me to see the theory put into practice.
I want to pass on this knowledge to handlers and trainers that are still using the old-school method of correction. I have a new GSD and I will be using the information on breaking down the forced retrieve to teach her the exercise. I think the course is set at the correct level and would not confuse even novice trainers. Well done to Ed and the team and I thought using people to mark was hilarious.
cheers, Leigh M"
